Fall 2022 Evening Lecture Series: Simon Carr, Bruce Gagnier, Steven Harvey, Stanley Lewis, Paul Resika, and Martica Sawin "Leland Bell: A Panel Discussion," recorded on September 28, 2022.

Organized in conjunction with the exhibition Leland Bell: Paint, Precision, and Placement. A Centennial Exhibition, this panel will explore the life and work of Leland Bell, a former NYSS faculty member. The exhibition, curated by Steven Harvey, will be on view from September 9 — October 23, 2022 at the NYSS Main Gallery.

Simon Carr lives and works in New York City. His recent paintings, drawings and prints have focused on street scenes and subway scenes in New York City. He has exhibited widely, most recently at Bowery Gallery, Westbeth Gallery, The Painting Center, Prince Street Gallery and Long Island University’s Selena Gallery. He teaches Drawing at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, part of CUNY.

Bruce Gagnier studied art history at Williams College and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and Columbia University, where he studied with Nicholas Carone, Peter Agostini and John Heliker. He has been in numerous solo and group exhibitions and has received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2016, also the Arts and Letters Award in Art from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2014. In 2004, he was elected Academician by the National Academy. Gagnier has taught at Yale University, Sarah Lawrence, Parsons, Haverford College and the International School of Art in Umbria, Italy. Between 1979 – 2017, he taught drawing and sculpture at the New York Studio School. Currently, he teaches drawing at the NYSS. He is represented by Thomas Park Gallery NYC and most recently had an exhibition with Thomas Park Gallery in Seoul, South Korea.

Steven Harvey is an art dealer with a gallery located at 208 Forsyth Street in the Lower East Side focused on contemporary painting. Harvey has made exhibitions of Bob Thompson’s drawings, Katherine Bradford’s ships, Sandro Chia’s works on paper, and Stanley Rosen’s ceramics. Previously, he served as director of contemporary exhibitions at Salander O’Reilly Gallery. He has organized exhibitions of James Lee Byars, Louis Michel Eilshemius, Louisa Matthiasdottir and The Guerilla Art Action Group. He also worked as a music journalist in the eighties writing about dance music. He has written extensively about art and popular music. He was a painter for over 30 years who studied at the NYSS in 1971.

Stanley Lewis studied art at Wesleyan University (BA 1963) and Yale University (MFA 1967). A beloved teacher, he has taught at several institutions including American University, Kansas City Art Institute and Chautauqua Institution, among many others. Lewis has been exhibiting since the early 70s is in the collection of the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, National Academy of Design, and Katzen Art Center at American University, among others. Lewis is represented by Betty Cuningham Gallery, New York.

Over his eight decade-long career, Paul Resika has exhibited at Bookstein Projects, New York, the Peridot Gallery, Graham Modern, Long Point Gallery, Provincetown, Berta Walker Gallery, Provincetown, Hackett-Freedman Gallery, San Francisco, Meredith Long & Company, Houston, Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects, New York and Salander-O’Reilly Galleries, New York. Resika’s work is included in the collections of the Hood Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Addison Gallery among numerous others. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship (1984) and has been elected Academician at the National Academy of Design (1978) and the American Academy of Arts and Letters (1994).

Martica Sawin is a native New Yorker who has spent a half century covering contemporary art in print and in the classroom. As a historian she has focused specially on Surrealism, but she has written more than a half hundred essays on contemporary artists for exhibition catalogues and art magazines as well as authoring a number of monographs.
