(19 Jan 2017) Orthodox Christian believers in Bosnia marked the Epiphany on Thursday by plunging into numbingly cold rivers in sub-freezing temperatures.
Epiphany, which celebrates the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan, is one of the most important holidays in the Orthodox Christian calendar.
As part of the celebrations in Bosnia, a crucifix is thrown into a river or lake and the faithful jump in after it, hoping to retrieve it and bring it back to shore.
It is believed that the person who retrieves it will be healthy and freed from evil all year.
In the eastern Bosnian city of Visegrad, 16 young men and one woman made the plunge on Thursday in front of a crowd of about a thousand people, who gathered to watch and cheer them on.
