"There are times when singing a song, particularly, a song that feels like riding ‘waves’, catches the singer, musicians and the audience alike - a mood is created that one doesn’t want to end and break the ‘wave’ and ‘mood’ at the shore and stop the song. This recording is reflective of that kind of a phase at a live musical event taking place at a restaurant at San Rafael, California, USA, in 1997. One song hugs the next and the next reaches for another one and so on. In Afghan musical tradition we have the concept of ‘chashnee’ which has resemblance with how I perform these songs on this occasion. The rhythm is the river carrying every song in it; Tamim jaan, who plays the tabla here, was not only a lively, tasteful musician and tabla player but also a dear friend. So is also Hassib jaan, playing the robab, a very dear friend who is a lover of music and a passionate robab player. And, of Kabir jaan Howaida: he is a legend and what makes this even remarkable has to do with the fact that music connects and transcends generations (and national borders!). To have piano and robab side by side on stage is very unique to this recording and occasion - all players play with their hearts and soul just for the sheer joy of having been infected by the magic of music and the inspiring energy of the audience."
