Youth Speaker, Amanda Hammett gets lots of questions from students about how to pick the RIGHT college MAJOR. In order to do this right, Amanda decided to bring in some expert advice.
Hi and welcome to this week's Real Talk with Amanda. I'm Amanda Hammett and I'll be answering your life's toughest questions as the cool big sister that you don't have. And this week...we are talking about picking your major in college.
I've gotten tons and tons of questions about picking a major in college. Some of you are worried about what to put on your college applications, while some of you are worried about picking a major now that you are in college. I want to be completely honest with you on this one. I didn't struggle with this myself. In fact, I went to college as a history major and I graduated as a history major. So, I called in some expert assistance for this question. I went to a friend who has been an admissions counselor at some top universities in the US. We had a fabulous 2 hour coffee break where we discussed this very thing. And the one thing she said that really stuck out to me was this...when you declare your major on your college application, it should be a conclusion not a hypothesis. What that means is that if you are applying to college as a pre-med student she would expect to see that it all over your application. Grades should be far higher in those classes. Extra-curricular activities /part-time jobs or volunteer positions ...anything to get you in and around that field of study.
Most universities and colleges ask on their application, "Why do you want major in ______?" This question has proven to be an incredible stumbling block for many students.
Which means...if you put a major that is not fully examined (you haven't taken classes and you have shown no other interest in that major than just marking it on your application...) it could seriously hurt your chances of getting into that school.
Now with that being said, I know many of you have told me that you are afraid to apply to colleges as "UNDECIDED". Don't be afraid to be undecided. But know that it is Your job to figure it out. Some schools have programs that require you to try out different fields of study your first year to help you figure that out. Or you could let your extra curricular activities help you figure it out. Look for internships or job shadowing...etc. And remember...the internships don't have to be for an entire semester.
If you are planning to go to college as an "UNDECIDED" major, you probably should not apply to universities where students are put on the track for their major from day 1 and there is no room for deviation from that plan.
In the comments below I want to hear about what you are planning to major in and why. And if you are already in college, what did you initially major in what you are majoring in now. And of course, tell us why you chose your current major.
If you liked this video, then LIKE it! And don't forget to share it with your friends . And as always, keep your questions rolling in...you never know next week...I might even be answering your life's toughest questions. Till then...I'm Amanda Hammett and this has been Real Talk with Amanda!
