Genghis Khan was besieging the Fortress of Pooyagak but was unable to breach its walls. He sent terms of peace offering to stop the siege in exchange for 1,000 cats. The ruler agreed to Genghis Khan's bizarre condition and provided the cats. Genghis Khan then ordered his men to tie oil soaked cotton to the cats' tails and set them on fire. The scared cats ran back into the primarily wooden city, igniting fires as they went with their burning tails. This caused hundreds of fires to erupt all at once within the city. The defenders were then overwhelmed trying to control the numerous fires. The Mongols then launched an assault while the city was distracted and easily conquered it.
