In this talk, I foreground situated histories always present but too often suppressed by design practices. Drawing on examples ranging from classroom experiments to collective action, I show that design impacts our everyday lives, often in small ways, along existing lines of inequity. Design methods tend to produce solutions that carry the problems with them. But they also create opportunities for noticing and addressing injustices. They show us that sitting with tension is an important part of working toward something new.
