A serving prison governor has told Sky News sentencing guidelines need to be reviewed because jails are running out of space.

He said prison should only be for serious and violent criminals - it comes after jail terms were handed out for "comments on social media."

In a wide-ranging interview, the governor said he fears it is inevitable that those released early from prison under new government policy will reoffend and return to prison.

He also described rising levels of violence and poor conditions inside.
