Philippine History The Establishment of Manila in 1571 (history of Manila)
In 1565, the Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi established a Spanish settlement in Cebu. The settlement, initially named "La Villa del Santissimo Nombre de Jesus de Cebu," served as a base for Spanish expeditions and trade. Over time, it developed into a thriving city, attracting merchants, missionaries, and settlers from Spain and other parts of the world.
In 1571, the Spanish forces defeated the local rulers and renamed the settlement "Intramuros," referring to the fortified city enclosed within walls. Intramuros became the center of political, religious, and economic power under Spanish rule. It was the capital of the Spanish East Indies and a hub for trade with China, Mexico, and other Southeast Asian countries.
Manila experienced a period of prosperity during the galleon trade, which involved the exchange of goods between Manila and Acapulco in New Spain (present-day Mexico). This trade route played a significant role in linking Asia with the Americas.
