Welcome to the Serra de Tramuntana

The Serra de Tramuntana has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO under the Cultural Landscape category. This is the international community’s acknowledgement of the near-perfect symbiosis between the action of human beings and nature, which has occurred for centuries, resulting in a monumental work by humans in which culture, traditions, aesthetics, spirituality and identity are merged.

The cultural landscape of the Serra is the fruit of the exchange of knowledge between cultures, with small-scale works performed collectively for a productive end, conditioned by the limitations imposed by the physical medium. Limitations overcome by knowledge and the intelligent use of resources, without destroying the medium. And it is also the recreation of a region through the collective imagination and works by artists who have found inspiration in it.

According to the European Landscape Convention, Cultural Landscape is “an area, as perceived by people, whose character is the result of the action and reaction of natural and/or human factors”. This would suggest that the aim is not only to maintain the Serra as it is now. It is also to improve human intervention, promoting it with sustainable activities in accordance with certain objectives.



Situation

The Serra de Tramuntana mountain range forms the backbone of the north-west of Mallorca. It runs for around 90 km, with a maximum width of 15 km, over 20 municipalities, the largest of which are Calvià, Pollença and Escorca—, and covers 30% of the island’s territory and more than 1,000 km2. Approximately 8,000 people live in the central areas, but the buffer zone population is 40,000 inhabitants. Several of its peaks have an altitude of over 1000 m, and the highest are Puig Major (1,443 m), Puig de Massanella (1,348 m), Serra d’Alfàbia (1,069 m), Es Teix (1,064) and Galatzó (1,026 m).

In these places of the Sierra de Tramontana the Black Vulture nests which together with the Mallorcan goat are the most emblematic habitants of the Mallorcan mountains.Today we travel the southwest half of this Magic Mountain.

Bienvenido a la Serra de Tramuntana

La Serra de Tramuntana está declarada Patrimonio Mundial por la Unesco en la categoría de Paisaje Cultural. Es el reconocimiento de la comunidad internacional a la simbiosis casi perfecta entre la acción del ser humano y la naturaleza, realizada durante siglos, de la que ha resultado una monumental obra humana en la que se mezclan cultura, tradiciones, estética, espiritualidad e identidad.
El paisaje cultural de la Serra es fruto del intercambio de conocimientos entre culturas, con pequeñas obras realizadas colectivamente con finalidad productiva, condicionadas por las limitaciones impuestas por el medio físico. Limitaciones superadas a base de sabiduría y del uso inteligente de los recursos, sin destruir el medio. Y también es la recreación de un territorio a través del imaginario colectivo y de las obras de artistas que han encontrado en él inspiración.

Según el Convenio Europeo del Paisaje, se entenderá como Paisaje Cultural cualquier parte del territorio tal y como lo percibe la población, y su carácter es el resultado de la acción y la interacción de factores naturales y/o humanos. Ello sugiere que no se trata solo de mantener el territorio de la Serra tal y como se encuentra en la actualidad. Se trata también de mejorar la intervención humana, promoverla con actividades sostenibles de acuerdo a unos objetivos.

La Serra de Tramuntana vertebra el noroeste de Mallorca. Se extiende a lo largo de unos 90 km, con una anchura máxima de 15 km, sobre el territorio de 20 municipios —siendo los mayores Calvià, Pollença y Escorca—, lo que supone casi un 30% del territorio insular y más de 1.000 km2. En las zonas núcleo viven unas 8.000 personas, pero la población de amortiguamiento es de 40.000 habitantes. Varias cimas superan los 1.000 m de altura, destacando el Puig Major (1.443), el Puig de Massanella (1.348 m), la Serra d’Alfàbia (1.069 m), es Teix (1.064) y el Galatzó (1.026 m).

Por estos lugares de la Sierra de Tramontana nidifica el Buitre Negro que junto con la cabra mallorquina son los habitanes más emblemáticos de las montañas mallorquinas. Hoy recorremos la mitad Suroeste de esta Sierra Mágica.
