Il trovatore ("The Troubadour") is a dramatic opera composed by Giuseppe Verdi, based on the play of the same name by Antonio García Gutiérrez. It premiered on 19 January 1853 in Rome and has since become part of the standard repertoire in opera.
"Vedi! le fosche notturne" is a piece for chorus sung by the Gypsies at the beginning of the second act. It is also more commonly known as the "Anvil chorus" because of the characteristic hammering on anvils. The Gypsies sing about their daily hard work and how wine and women brighten their day.
