Carey Beebe demonstrating coupling the keyboards on a French Double Harpsichord.
The keyboards on a French Double Harpsichord can be connected or coupled so both can be played from the lower. This is the mechanism of the shove coupler. With the upper keyboard retracted, the keyboards are completely independent, or uncoupled. When the player pushes the upper keyboard about 12mm away from him, the rear of each upper key lever is directly above the vertical slip of wood glued in the corresponding lower key called the coupler dog. When the keyboards are in the coupled position, playing a lower manual key must push the corresponding upper key. Each upper key can still play by itself.
