I first transcribed this, my favourite song by American acoustic guitarist Andy McKee in 2010, for the sheer joy of doing it, and some of you may remember I posted a video of this on my old channel a while after in early 2012. I wanted to use my first video of the year to reflect on how far I've come since that recording.
Back in 2010, transcribing and adapting this song for the harp was a very time-consuming challenge, figuring out how to replicate all the sounds of the original using the harp on my own, and trying to work out how to play such clean, clear and loud harmonics, and double harmonics(!), quickly and accurately enough to bring the same voicing to the song. Thankfully the fact this process was hard, and took a long time, didn't stop me from coming back to this song again and again, and I'm happy to say I never forgot how to play it after initial memorising, so it lives in my "memory vault" with about an hour and a half's worth of other pieces from past times.
Over the years I've played this song in recitals, at Bath Abbey during prayers, at many beautiful wedding locations, and for countless other occasions, and I never cease to love getting lost in it. I'm sure it also helps that it's in G lydian...!
Thanks again, Andy, for giving us all such beautiful, soulful music to heal with.
