The township of Glenrowan may be most famous as the site of the final siege and capture of Ned Kelly and his gang in 1880. Their story is preserved in the townships attractions, museums, and historic walk, however there is much more to Glenrowan than Ned and his armour.
You can easily explore the town on foot. Pick up a copy of the Glenrowan Heritage Siege Precinct walking map from one of the local business or from the local information stand at the Glenrowan Vintage Hall & Cafe. This helpful flyer will guide you around key Ned Kelly Gang sites of significance such as the Ann Jones' Glenrowan Inn, Police Shelter Site, Gravel Contractors Encampment, Ned Kelly Capture Site, McDonnell's Railway Tavern and much more!
The town is also perfect for those looking to pursue a little more adventure. Bushwalks with impressive lookouts are abundant with the Warby Ovens National Park running adjacent to the township. Home to a range of threatened species and communities such as the Grey Grass Tree, Temperate Woodland Bird community, and Carpet Python, the park is an important landscape for both conservation of species and the education of visitors, resulting in the IUCN Green Listing of the area in 2021. Start your day with a hike up to Mt Glenrowan to be rewarded with amazing sunrise views, or head out on the family friendly Friends Track, which passes a stand of iconic Grasstrees as you walk through forested granite hills.
For the cyclist, Glenrowan is included in many easy to challenging road rides. With the challenging steep climb, the Taminick Loop has been the chosen route for state championships, as it boasts the steep ascent up Taminick Gap before you are rewarded with a speedy descent and rolling country roads to the finish line. For those after less climbing, the ride out to the Winton Wetlands is just as rewarding. Those seeking an off road adventure, will love the Friends Track in the Warby Ovens National Park, this shared walking/mountain bike track boasts impressive vistas and technical rock gardens to keep the adrenaline flowing.
The food and beverage experiences in Glenrowan cater to all from quaint cafes sure to be a hit with the family to a bakery, hotel and providores. Renowned wineries such as Baileys of Glenrowan, Booths Taminick Cellars (which houses Black Dog Brewery) and Morrisons Winery should be on any wine drinkers bucket list while visiting the town. When in season, there are a variety of farm gates, and pick your own orchards including cherries, peaches, apricots, kiwi and many more stone fruit varieties.
