Categories of Computer Networks or Types of Computer Networks
Computer networks are categorized by the geographic area they cover:
Local Area Network (LAN): Computer network created in a small, geographically restricted area. LAN can be within a single building or between adjacent building but the overall radius of the established computer network should be less than 1 Km.
Wide Area Network (WAN): A WAN spans a large geographical area, often a country or continent. Typical WAN has radius of more than 100 Kms. WAN uses services from telephone networks, cable networks, satellite system etc.
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN): A MAN spans a geographical area that is larger than a LAN but smaller than a WAN. Typical MAN has radius of greater than 1Km but less then 100 Kms. MAN covers several buildings or even the entire city.
Personal Area Network (MAN): A PAN covers a geographical area that is in the vicinity of a person. Typical PAN has laptop, smartphone and tablets connected to it. Typical PAN has radius of 10 meters. Connection between nodes can be wired as well as wireless. IEEE 802.15 standard deals with wireless PAN technologies. This include Bluetooth, ZigBee and Body Area Network ( a network in, on or around human body (not limited to human body))
