The video contains excerpts from a police interview recorded on December 25, 1993, between then Richardson County, Nebraska sheriff Charles Laux and Brandon Teena, a female to male transgender who was reporting a rape.
Authorities declined to make an arrest for the alleged rape citing a lack of evidence.
On December 31, 1993, Brandon Teena and two friends were shot and killed. Following the murders, Marvin Thomas "Tom" Nissen and John Lotter were later arrested and charged with murder.
Nissen was ultimately sentenced to life in prison and Lotter received the death penalty.
Teena's mother, JoAnn Brandon, later sued Richardson County and Sheriff Charles Laux for failing to prevent Teena's death, as well as being an indirect cause. Brandon won the case and was awarded $80,000 for "mental suffering" and $6,223.20 for funeral costs. During a subsequent hearing, Brandon was awarded an additional $12,000 for wrongful death and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
A judge deemed the police questioning of Teena "demeaning, accusatory and intimidating."
