One of the biggest stories of the local government election was the record number of independents contesting wards across the country. Last year, the Constitutional Court ruled the electoral system should allow for independents not aligned to any political party to run for office. The One SA Movement, led by Mmusi Maimane, used this poll as a launchpad to test the concept of a strong independent political challenge. With close to half a million votes cast for independents and an eye on 2024, South Africa’s political landscape seems destined for change.
