Lynyrd Skynyrd's Gary Rossington, the last surviving founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, has sadly passed away at the age of 71. Rossington was a renowned guitarist and a vital member of the southern rock band, who were known for their hits such as “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird.” He had been battling health issues in recent years and had retired from touring.
Rossington was born on December 4, 1951, in Jacksonville, Florida. In the late 1960s, he met Ronnie Van Zant, and they went on to form Lynyrd Skynyrd with other members in 1964. The band went on to achieve massive success in the 1970s, but it was marred by tragedy when three members, including Van Zant, died in a plane crash in 1977.
Despite the setbacks, Rossington continued to work on music and was involved in various Lynyrd Skynyrd projects. He was known for his distinctive guitar style and was a crucial part of the band’s sound. He was also involved in several other bands, including The Rossington Collins Band and The Gary Rossington Band.
