Bill Clinton and Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin have met at the White House for talks.
Clinton gave a strong hint that the U-S will support Russia's application to the International Monetary Fund for a nine (b)billion dollar loan.
Russia is desperate for the money to keep its economy afloat in the run-up to June's Presidential elections.
Viktor Chernomyrdin is in the U-S for a round of talks with most of the country's political leaders.
Earlier in the day he met prominent Republican Newt Gingrich, then he travelled to the White House to meet President Clinton.
On the agenda were talks about co-operation between the two countries - in particular the sixth session of Russian-American commission which began yesterday.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian with English translation)
"... the sixth session of the Commission. So we made some significant progress. And I believe that is due to the organisational ability of your (Clinton's) side that it was possible to have some results. Perhaps for the lack of time we don't have as many results as we could have done."

Clinton suggested he will support Russia's plea for international financial help.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I personally am convinced by the assurances that I received from President Yeltsin on our telephone call last week, and the record that the Prime Minister has himself established, that Russia is firmly moving forward on reform and I believe that Russia will receive the support of the International Monetary Fund and the other international institutions as well as the United States and other allies. I think we'll keep moving in this direction ."

There are still doubts that the I-M-F will give the go ahead, because of doubts about the strengths of the government's policies.
But the Russian Prime Minister will be hoping the President's support will swing the vote.
