Medicare Part B is your outpatient insurance and combined with Medicare Part A it will cover most of your health needs. In addition to your premium, you need to be aware of deductibles and coinsurance. In 2022, the Part B deductible is $233. You’ll have to meet this amount of out pocket before you are responsible for coinsurance. You premiums do not count towards your deductible. Once you have met your deductible, your coinsurance is 20% of the Medicare approved amount. If you wish to lower your Medicare Part B premium, there are a few options which may be open to you.
Your Part B monthly premium is based on your income. Medicare looks at your income from two years prior. If you’ve retired recently, you may currently be in a different bracket than you were two years ago. If that’s the case, you can file form SSA-44: [ Ссылка ] This can help to adjust your premium for your new, lower income.
You may also want to speak with your accountant about itemizing your deductions. If you have significant medical expenses in a given year, it may be in your best interests to itemize your deductions. Of course, speak with your accountant, but you may be able to access a much larger return if the premiums paid and medical expenses are significant.
If your income is on the lower end, you may be eligible for one of several Medicare savings programs. Basically, there are a few different programs that may help you to pay your Part B (and sometimes Part A) premiums. These programs will also help with Part D expenses which is your prescription drug coverage. You must meet certain asset and income criteria to be eligible.
You can also choose to go the Medicare Advantage route. A disclaimer here, many Medicare Advantage plans claim to be free. This is absolutely not the case. You will still have to pay for your Medicare Part B premium. However, some plans will offer you a rebate or sorts and may actually credit you for a portion of your Medicare Part B premium. This would, of course, lower your monthly premiums. But please do not pursue a Medicare Advantage plan just because it seems cheaper. If you are unable to access doctors and hospitals in network or you don’t have the benefits you need, you’ll end up spending more in the long run. If you are interested in a Part C plan, we suggest you work with a broker.
