LEADIN:
One of the most coveted pink diamonds in the world is being auctioned in Hong Kong.
The 11 carat Williamson diamond is expected to fetch millions of dollars when it goes up for sale in three days time (7 October).
STORYLINE:
It's the size of a small birds egg and it's no surprise this diamond is called a Fancy Vivid Pink Star, the light sparkles and dances around it.
The diamond is expected to fetch more than 21 million (USD) here at the Sotheby's auction house in Hong Kong.
The diamond is a rare 11.15-carat Fancy Vivid Pink Star diamond from the Williamson Mine in Mwadui, Tanzania, where it was discovered.
The mine which is one of the oldest in the world is famous for producing saturated pink diamonds, according to Sotheby's.
The auction house says pink is one of the rarest colors to occur naturally in diamonds and only the smallest proportion of the miniscule number classified as pink, are of strong enough color to classify as 'Fancy Vivid Pink'.
Also most are relatively small in size weighing less than 10 carats so this one is considered a rarity.
This Williamson Fancy Vivid Pink Star is the second largest vivid pink diamond with internally flawless clarity ever to be offered for sale at auction according to Sotheby's.
This 'Fancy Vivid Pink' was first unveiled in London and toured Dubai, Singapore, Taipei before arriving here in Hong Kong where it will be the centre of a special standalone auction on 7 October 2022.
The stones are especially popular in Asia according to Regine Ngan, Asia Director and Head of Jewelry Department of Sotheby's.
She says: "Pink diamonds are already really rare, and especially the Williamson Pink Diamonds. It is a very rare occurrence. It is the largest over 10 carat Fancy Vivid Pink IF to ever appear in auction. "
The largest is a 59.60-carat flawless vivid pink diamond which originated from the same mine was auctioned in 2017.
According to Ngan, the auction house is expecting some important private clients who are bidding from Asia.
