This video is a reference tutorial about various ways you can optimize your NIFs for Skyrim armor, clothing, jewelry or accessories using NifSkope. I am a big advocate of incorporating this powerful tool into your outfit workflows, no matter which 3D modeling software you use. Refer to the Timestamps below to see the topics covered in this video.
I will be showing examples of how to complete all of these checks, tweaks, and fixes in NifSkope. This covers what a NIF should look like for a wearable item vs. a ground model; the flags that meshes should have in the NIF; how to find and change the partition (body slot); changing the order of meshes in the NIF; removing extra unused bones and strings; changing the names of meshes; re-facing normals (and why that needs to be done); how to change texture and shader properties; adding transparency or modifying the flags and thresholds for the NiAlphaProperty; using the NiFloatExtraData block to add the RaceMenu HH OFFSET for high heels; transforming meshes to move them around, rotate them or make them bigger or smaller; and changing the rotation or size of the item in your character’s inventory screen. I’ll be spending a good bit of time on texture and shader properties in particular; and this section will include examples of what the different settings do - emissive vs. specular vs. glossiness and so on.
This video is intended for users who know a little bit about NifSkope but are still working to upskill themselves. If you need a refresher on how to use NifSkope, please watch video #6 in this tutorial series first!
Note that there is a companion mod for this tutorial series called “Simply for Practice” on the Nexus. Download, install, and activate it as you would any other mod. The link is provided in RESOURCES below.
