The evidence is pretty clear that people continue to work when they get a basic income. In some instances, people with basic income work more and are more able to find better-paying work.
The Parliamentary Budget Office estimated the cost of providing a basic income to all Canadians in need at 85 billion dollars annually. However, they noted that the government already spends a similar amount, and even more, on programs for low-income individuals. By allocating these funds more effectively, it could potentially cut the poverty rate in Canada by 49% without raising taxes or cutting vital social programs.
