Plaque is soft, sticky and colourless substance that adheres on to the tooth surface. It is formed by the bacteria and the food particles that we consume. There are over 500 species of different bacteria in the structure of a plaque. It is light creamish or yellowish in colour and it is difficult to see. It contains bacteria that causes cavities and gum diseases. If this plaque is not removed regularly, by routine brushing, it forms calculus. Calculus is a hard substance that is calcified plaque itself. This is easily seen if it is present above the gum line. It is brownish or yellowish in colour. Calculus provides a larger surface area for the plaque to adhere on itself and the destruction of the gum tissues is more invasive. Few things to followed to keep calculus and plaque at bay would be brushing twice routinely and use of interdental cleansing aids like flossing, interdental brushes can help reduce the formation of plaque. Even the advanced methods called as water flosser helps to remove the plaque in between two teeth. Consumption of healthy diet and diet modifications like low consumptions of carbohydrates and refined foods can also help to contribute to lower the plaque levels. Use of a mouthwash in between brushing would help you to lower your plaque levels. Visiting your dentist regularly once in 6 months or professional cleaning would help you maintain your oral hygiene.
