With the Coronavirus and quarantines on a lot of people's minds right now in the Jewish community, Rabbi Ephraim Buchwald, Director of NJOP, speaks this week about the fragility of human life. At the end of a Jewish wedding they break a glass. One reason is to remember the fragility of life. One day we are here, the next we may not. With the Coronavirus, this is a feeling a lot of us have. The anxiety of not knowing what will be next. In the Jewish community in the New York area, there are a lot of people in isolation. They may be unable to go to synagogue for Purim. They may be told to listen to the reading of the megillah over the phone or internet. One man lost a parent this week and is unable to have a proper shiva because he is in isolation. That's really what we have to think about. In an instant, things can change. But they can also change for good. This is the story of Purim. We thought everything was lost. But thanks to human and Divine intervention, we were able to address the issue and the celebration could go on. Let's hope the celebration can go on and we have a happy Purim. May all who are ill soon recover.
