The International Standard Sunday School Lesson for May 23, 2021 is about:
Ezekiel: Preaching to the Exiles!
Our biblical study is from the 26th book in the Holy Bible, located between the book of Lamentations, and the book of Daniels. It is the book of Ezekiel, the prophet, chapter 18, verses 1 through 9, and 30 through 32.
Our Sunday School Memory Verse is from Ezekiel chapter 18, verse 4:
“Behold, all souls are mine! As the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine! The soul that sinneth, it shall die.”
Reading from the Contemporary English Version, we can grasp the severity of this verse.
“The lives of all people belong to me… parents, as well as their children. However only those who sin will be put to death.”

About the prophet Ezekiel.
Ezekiel was a contemporary of the prophet Jeremiah. He prophesied during, and after the fall of Jerusalem to the Israelites of Judah, after they were exiled in Babylonia.
Ezekiel was called to serve God on the fifth day, of the fourth month, in the fifth year that the former King of Judah, (King Jehoiachin), was in exile.
King Jehoiachin reigned only three months over Judah before he and thousands of prominent, and skillful Jewish residents were taken into Babylonian captivity in 597 BC.
Ezekiel started recording his visions in the book of Ezekiel about 592 BC.
Ezekiel was among the first group of Judah’s residents taken into exile. They were resettled in Babylon, by the river, Chebar.
The exiles were devastated emotionally, and torn. They had questions that needed answers, and answers that needed clarification.
Are we forsaken by God?
If God did forsake us… who is to blame?
Did God forsake us?
If he did forsake us, was it because our Kings sinned against him?
Why would God allow his Temple with it’s altars… to be destroyed?
Why would he allow the promised land to be taken from us?
Why did so many of our people have to die at the hands of the Babylonian Chaldeans?
