Silvio Berlusconi was honoured with applause as his casket was carried into Milan’s Duomo cathedral for his state funeral on Wednesday.
Thousands of people outside the Duomo and within paid their respects as Berlusconi’s flower-draped casket was hoisted out of the hearse. His children and companion teared up as the casket was placed in front of the altar.
But opposition politicians and other critics were furious that Berlusconi, who died from leukaemia on Monday at the age of 86, had been afforded not just a state funeral but also a day of national mourning.
