My 1982 tile floor was laid on 1/2 inch particle board, which was glued and nailed to the plywood subfloor. Removing this residual particle board is AWFUL! I am getting better at it, though. First, I use a hammer drill to remove the tile and as much particle board as I can. Then I attach a scraping blade to my reciprocating saw to attack the glued-down spots. Next I attack the glued down spots with a bladed scraping pole. Finally, I run a belt sander over the subfloor, with 40 grit paper, to even everything out.
