Amaria BB has self-confidence that's backed by lots of skill. Example: the Jamaican-born, London-raised singer brushes off most comparisons to fellow UK dancehall artists, saying her unique brand of Caribbean-inflected R&B has “never been done before.” Citing Patti Labelle as her biggest influence, the up-and-comer looks to the emotional vulnerability of powerful 70s and 80s soul singers as her inspiration. Example two: her saucy and sexual lyrics are sure to raise eyebrows; she writes like she doesn’t care who’s listening. When she was ten, Amaria (that’s her real name, the BB part is a secret) performed at Harlem's Apollo Theater, so she probably didn't have many butterflies when she hit our DSCVR studio to knock out “On It” and “Slow Motion" from her new ‘What’s Done In The Dark’ EP. The latter song has been buzzing since last summer, and we’ve got a feeling all her tracks will be blasting from Hackney to Harlem this summer too.
