The Symphony No. 2 in E minor (1906/07) was composed in Dresden, with Sergei Rachmaninoff encouraged by the success of his Piano Concerto in C minor. The premiere was performed at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg on 26 January 1908, with the composer conducting.
