Kya-Kya Surabaya is a place that used to be crowded as a night market in the Chinatown area of Surabaya. Along Jalan Kembang Jepun, stalls were set up selling various kinds of food, both Chinese cuisine, Surabaya specialties and other foods. The word kya-kya is taken from a dialect of the Chinese language which means walking.
The Kya-Kya Center was finally designed on a 730 meter long, 20 meter wide road, accommodating 200 vendors (food and non-food), 2,000 seats, 500 dining tables with due regard to safety studies. In addition, a study on the behavior of the citizens of the city of Surabaya, a study of parking and transportation, a study of culture (local architecture, genius loci), a study of economic, technical feasibility, cleaning systems, utilities (drainage, drainage, electricity, sound system, garbage), utilization of human resources local government, cooperation with residents, NGOs, tourism potentials (ancient buildings, historical monuments), and so on in an integrated manner.
Kya-Kya Surabaya has finally succeeded. Kya-Kya Surabaya was officially opened for the first time on May 31, 2003, coinciding with the birthday of the city of Surabaya.
The location of Kya-kya Kembang Jepun is second to none when this area is full of cultural nights, so even when the architect brings the spirit of place, Chinese architectural presentation is an absolute. Quality cultural performances are also presented, such as busking festivals, performances of keroncong music, Chinese classical music, to children's lion dances and the Remo Boy dance. Meanwhile, thematic events were held such as Shanghai Night, Dancing on the Street, Agoestoesan Tjap Kya-kya Kembang Djepoen and Mystical Night, Full Moon Festival and so on.
