I think I did the best thing I could in the moment which was stay as calm and still as possible and just make discouraging, but not threatening noises??? I truly was not prepared because as far as I “knew” I had no food… (except the apple I had forgotten was in my purse purse).
If you are like me and never leave the house without a snack, check your bags before visiting Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur.
While there isn’t anyone or anything there to stop you from feeding the monkeys, you shouldn’t. The primarily reason is for your own safety. Some people bring food with the intention to feed them and you may even find an enterprising person or two at the temple selling small bananas (pisang mas) to tourists. The monkeys aren’t evil or mean. They are just incredibly used to humans and aren’t afraid of you at all. Naturally, they can get aggressive when food is involved and you probably don’t want to get bitten by those teeth.
They will also grab things that aren’t food sometimes like glasses, hats, cameras, and drinks. I’m just really thankful I didn’t get bitten or lose purse purse.
