Course description:
Both research findings and clinical lore are leading us all to the conviction that treatment of addictive disorders must encompass awareness that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and other traumatic events contribute to their etiology. Dr. Trogden will guide us in an in-depth review of the basics of trauma-informed care as applied to addictions treatment; specifically, the intersection between specifically-sexual trauma and addiction and validated treatment approaches for working with clients who struggle with both trauma and an addictive disorder.

Learning Objectives

1. Develop an understanding of the core principles of trauma-informed care and how to apply them to work with substance use clients.

2. Define addiction and sexual trauma as etiologically interrelated and understand their impact on the brain and behavior.

3. Develop an understanding of the prevalence of adverse childhood experience (ACEs) and trauma and those who present for services.
