I AM NOT A MINI FAN. Never have been tbh, in fact they've never really appealed to me, apart from the classic Minis of course, and even then, along with the VW Beetle, the classic Mini has never really been my cuppa tea. It's a personal preference really, I like looking at them, I admire and respect the passion and perseverance of their owners and enthusiasts, but I've never had the had the desire to own one....till NOW.
Progress is a funny thing when it comes to cars, most definitely they've become safer and better over the years, but somehow they've also lost something along the way, character. And by that I don't mean they've lost the ability to break down, all cars new or old can still do that, I mean it more in terms of driver engagement. As I've said before, I strongly feel that new cars are doing TOO MUCH driving for their owners, leaving drivers little to do accept steer...oh wait, some new cars do that for u too...
They've also become a LOT bigger physically over the years; take for example the BMW E30 vs. the current generation 3-Series. The latter looks like a 7-Series next to an E30. Also the original Fiat 500 vs. the latest gen 500, or the classic Porsche 911 vs. the current.... ok, u get the picture. This happenstance is not because we as humans have doubled or tripled in size over the last half century, it's more to do with the active and passive safety systems incorporated into modern day cars, not to mention stuff like stronger steel, crumple zones, vast amounts of electronic modules and computerization, etc. etc. etc. The current gen Minis are no different. They've grown in size over the years due to this. Remember the Mini Paceman? There was absolutely nothing 'mini' about it per se, only its name.
So here now we have the Mini R56. One of the earlier Minis from (then) new owners BMW, the R56, imho, is the most honest example, in terms of being true, to the classic Mini out there, and despite being only a mere decade old, it's fast becoming a modern-day classic. I'd bet that Alexander Arnold Constantine Issigonis (18 November 1906 – 2 October 1988) would never have dreamt that someday one of his early creations would spawn such a legion of strong followers globally, but it has, and I would reckon the R56 would be the variant he would most strongly agree with....and maybe the Clubman too.
I love this little car, and I've already asked Ken to let me have 'first-refusal' if he ever wanted to sell it, but judging from how much he enjoys driving this little fire-cracker, I doubt that's gonna happen anytime soon!
For the record though, my fave variant of the 'new' Minis is the Mini Coupe, but sadly it's been discontinued, which makes it even MORE desirable to me now.
