Today we take you for a silent hike up to the Tete des Faux summit. It's a day of sun and snow, nature and history, warm breeze and chilling vestiges... and along the path we show you some unusual places.
The Tête des Faux summit in Vosges (France), at 1219 mt (3999 feet) was a strategic defensive strong point during WWI.
The summit takes its name from the beech forest (fagus sylvatica in Latin, Fau in old French) which once covered it.
This part of the Vosges mountains was once at the core of a brief, but terrible battle between the French and German armies.
The trail goes uphill to the little Tête des Faux, and we stumble upon a war cemetery, in the middle of the forest.
This necropolis, created in 1924, holds the graves of 408 French soldiers. Today the Duchesne cemetery is a peaceful, solemn place and it's impossible to comprehend what happened here.
This cemetery, like the summit of the Tête des Faux, has been classified a historical monument since 1921.
Once on the top, we reach a German two-story blockhouse/citadel at the eastern end of the summit of the Tête des Faux. The dungeon-like bunker has three entrances and numerous firing embrasures that could be closed with metal shutters. The internal wooden floor, however, has not stood the test of time.
An eerie, surreal atmosphere can be felt all around.
All around the summit remain kilometers of barbed wire and hundreds of defensive obstacles ("chevaux de frise") whose sharp points still present as much risk as in 14/18.
And while heading back, we stop to search the area for our first ever Geocaching treasure hunt. If you've never heard of it before, Geocaching is basically a world-wide treasure hunt where participants hide and seek containers, called "caches", at specific locations marked by coordinates all over the world, containing a logbook and sometimes other little toys or trinkets, left by other seekers. After signing the log, the cache must be placed back exactly where you found it.
We're total newbies but treasure hunting in the middle of woods really sounds like our cup of tea :-)
