TERROR LIST DISCHARGE
Secretary of State John Kerry has signed an order officially rescinding Cuba from the terror list. This comes as the White House attempts to re-establish diplomatic ties between Washington and Havana. US President Barack Obama recommended Congress last month that Cuba be removed from the blacklist, setting in motion a 45-day congressional review period. While the move carries symbolic importance, removing Cuba from the list might eliminate some of the trade barriers between the neighbors, but the overall embargo still remains to be discussed.
NUCLEAR DEADLOCK
The U.N. nuclear watchdog said it had made incremental progress but no breakthrough in its inquiry into whether Iran may have researched an atom bomb. Iran and the group of six world powers reached a preliminary framework nuclear agreement in Switzerland in early April.The international nuclear watchdog urged Tehran on more cooperation and willingness for its investigation in the nuclear issue until the punitive sanctions imposed by the West are completely lifted.
REGIME DEFEAT
Assad regime forces have left the city of Ariha after it was seized by opposition forces. Ariha was the last city in the Idlib province under Regime control. Syrian coalition known as the Fattah Army seized the town of Ariha on Thursday, giving the group full control of Idlib province. The Fattah Army is made up of several armed groups, including the Nusra Front. The pull back is the latest in a string of defeats by the Syrian regime. The city, once home to more than 80 thousand people, is strategically located on the main army supply lines between Idlib and Latakia.
DEATH TOLL NEARS 2000
India’s heat wave death toll nears 2000 as temperature goes up nearly 50 degree Celsius. Deaths have been recorded in the South of India, with several others also reported in the northwestern desert state of Rajasthan.Hospitals were on alert to treat victims of heatstroke and dehydration. India's Meteorological Department said it had issued heat warnings to several states where temperatures were forecast to top 45C. A monsoon is expected to bring some relief to southern states on May 31.
