First Lady Jeannette Kagame joined the first U.S. Rwandan Diaspora Women's Convention, which was held in the Washington, D.C. area on Saturday, 19 March 2016.
This event brought together about 500 participants coming from the D.C.-Maryland-Virginia (DMV) area, the southern and western states of the U.S., and Rwanda.
This convention was organised by the US Rwandan Diaspora and the Rwandan International Network Association (RINA), in collaboration with the Embassy of Rwanda in the U.S.
The event was themed “Empowering Rwandan Women in the Diaspora: Challenges and Opportunities”, and featured a series of panels looking at the roles of the different generations of women in the shaping of our nation; and the experiences of those in the diaspora, who continue to uphold Rwanda's heritage despite the challenges of adapting to the western world.
