Overwrap Cross-Choke (BJJ): the cross-choke (juji-jime) is usually one of the first submissions taught to white belts with the gi in jiu-jitsu. At higher levels, it shows up most often from top of mount or even half-guard, but it can also be highly effective from the closed guard. There are two major challenges with finishing from there - first, you’re heading right into your partner’s defensive hands, and second, their strong posture makes it hard to get the second hand in place. When you over-wrap one of the arms and score the cross collar from there, you address both these problems at once. One of the defensive arms is out of the way, and their posture is controlled through the grip. All that’s left is the second finishing hand…
