Maxus, a brand under Chinese automaker SAIC, has unveiled its new electric pick-up truck for Europe, the eTerron 9. Billed as “Europe’s first 4×4 electric serial pickup truck built on a dedicated electric platform,” the eTerron 9 is set to go on sale in the Old Continent in the fourth quarter of this year, with pricing set to be announced then. Also known as the Interstellar X in China, the eTerron 9 is a big truck that measures 5,500 mm long, 2,005 mm wide, 1,860 mm tall and with a wheelbase spanning 3,300 mm. That makes it 140 mm longer overall than the Ford Ranger, or 175 mm when compared to the Toyota Hilux. Design-wise, SAIC says the pick-up truck adopts a ‘New Electrified Mecha’ aesthetic featuring C-shaped daytime running lights that are linked by a light bar, wrapping around the main headlamps. The body shape is edgy and accompanied by plastic body cladding, while the rear gets a powered tailgate as well as a midgate that extends the bed into the cabin at a touch of a button. With the midgate open, you can load items up to 2,400 mm long into the truck – the company claims a surfboard will easily fit without much issue. There’s also a powered frunk that opens to reveal 236 litres of storage space, and this space is enough for two people to be seated when taking a break or camping, the company says. Inside, you’ll find two-tone leather upholstery and a pair of displays (digital instrument cluster and touchscreen infotainment system), which are joined by a floating centre console, a two-spoke steering wheel and metallic accents. The driver’s seat is also powered and comes with ventilation and massage functions, while the front seats can be folded down to create nearly flat sleeping area measuring 1,700 mm long. No shortage of storage compartments either, with 20 spots scattered around the cabin. As for the powertrain, it is made up of a 102-kWh ‘Tetris’ battery pack that provides up to 430 km of range following the WLTP standard. The battery supports DC fast charging at a max capacity of 115 kW, with a 20-80% state of charge achieved in about 40 minutes. For utilitarian purposes, there are also power outlets with outputs of either 2.2 or 6.6 kW. Power from the battery is sent to a pair of electric motors – one for each axle – that provide a total system output of 442 PS (436 hp or 325 kW), which is enough to get the eTerron 9 from 0-100 km/h in 5.8 seconds. The pick-up truck will also have towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes and a maximum payload capacity of 620 kg, which SAIC says outperforms competitors in its class.
