The world of self-publishing has never been more accessible than it is now. Thanks to platforms like Amazon KDP, aspiring authors like myself can publish our work and reach a wider audience without the need for a traditional publisher. While it sounds like a dream come true for most of us authors, being a self-published fantasy author on Amazon has its pros and con. In this video, I'll talk about my experience, exploring both the advantages and the challenges of being a self-published author.
The Ups:
Complete Control Over Your Work
One of the most significant advantages of self-publishing is that you have complete control over your work. You can choose the cover design, book format, pricing, and promotional strategies. This gives you the freedom to create the book that you envision and to make changes along the way.
Higher Royalties
Traditional publishing contracts often pay authors a small percentage of the book's profits. Self-publishing, on the other hand, allows you to earn a higher percentage of the book's royalties. Amazon KDP pays authors up to 70% royalties on their book sales, which is significantly higher than traditional publishing contracts.
Faster Time to Market
Self-publishing is a much quicker process than traditional publishing. Instead of waiting months or even years for your book to be accepted and published, you can upload your manuscript to Amazon KDP and have it available for purchase within 24-48 hours.
Global Reach
With Amazon KDP, you can publish your book in multiple countries and reach a global audience. This means that your book can be sold to readers all over the world, which can help to boost your sales and increase your visibility.
The Downs:
No Guarantee of Success
Just because you publish your book on Amazon KDP doesn't mean that it will automatically become a bestseller. The competition in the self-publishing world is fierce, and there are no guarantees of success. You will need to invest time and money into marketing and promotion to get your book noticed.
Quality Control
As a self-published author, you are responsible for all aspects of your book's quality. This includes editing, formatting, and cover design. If your book is not up to par, it could negatively impact your sales and reputation as an author.
Lack of Support
Self-publishing can be a lonely and isolating process. Without the support of a traditional publishing house, you are responsible for all aspects of your book's creation, promotion, and distribution. This can be overwhelming, and it can be challenging to stay motivated and focused.
Limited Distribution Channels
While Amazon KDP is a great platform for self-publishing, it is just one distribution channel. If you want to reach a wider audience, you will need to explore other options, such as Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, and Kobo.
So basically, being a self-published fantasy author using Amazon KDP has its ups and downs. It offers complete control over your work, higher royalties, faster time to market, and global reach. BUT, it also comes with challenges such as no guarantee of success, quality control, lack of support, and limited distribution channels. Ultimately, the decision to self-publish or pursue traditional publishing is a personal one that should be based on your goals, resources, and preferences as an author, but for me, its perfect!
