Johnny infuses his signature vulnerability into a soulful R & B interpretation of this classic from the early 60's. From the 1989 release, "In the Still of the Night" (a review at the time called it "One of Mathis' best recordings to date"). Composed in 1962 by John D. Loudermilk, an 'eclectic' (quite original) writer with strong roots in country music (one of his big hits was "Tobacco Road''), the song was popularized by The Casinos in 1967. While the song is best known for the earlier '67 rock and roll, pop version where it made the top 40, it later became a country music hit by Eddy Arnold. I've listened to versions by several performers while researching this song. Yet, the reaction one gets while listening to Johnny's delivery at (2:48) of ."..mmmmm.." .... is a heart melter. This song brings back specific shades of those slow teen dances.....Just listen.... see where it takes you........ .
While you can find CD and LP versions for sale online, it's no longer in print. Well worth it, I hope this great classic makes a CD return.. You can, at present, purchase the album in Mp3 format. Enjoy.....
