Using the shoulder stock, the artillery crews were able to engage attacking cavalry at longer distances than they could with a pistol alone. I would imagine not having to lug a rifle around when your primary objective is to keep your crew serviced machine gun or artillery piece running, would be a great benefit. Today, it's an interesting conversation piece and an intriguing bit of history.
