This is the Plaza de Colon.
The statue on top of the column is Christopher Columbus.
The building to the left is the Torres de Colon.
It was built from the top down. The green cap was added later to comply with local building regulations.
The sandstone colored concrete blocks are the sculpture called Jardines del Descubrimiento (the Gardens of Discovery). created by architect and sculptor Joaquín Vaquero Turcios to honor the discovery of the Americas.
The stunning sculpture is called Julia, by Barcelona sculptor Jaume Plensa. Unfortunately it will only be in the plaza through Dec 2020.
The architect of the Torres de Colon, Antonio Lamela, was also responsible for the T4 terminal at Madrid International Airport (Madrid-Barajas)
The background music is a live performance we were lucky to see by two of the greatest living maestros de Flamenco, Pepe Habichuela, and Rafael Riqueni
