Me and my golf students look to 2021 US Open Champion Jon Rahm as one of the best golf swings on the PGA Tour to study and emulate while developing our game. Quite a few casual golfers can quickly apply the athletic motion found in Rahm's golf swing to their own with little to no difficulty with focused training.
Unlike many top speed golf pros, the foundation of a Jon Rahm golf swing requires very little technical focus as much of the athletic motion can be achieved through natural movement and adaptation. Me and my golf students find this to be the most unique aspect of Rahm's golf swing. Undoubtedly, much of Jon's success stems from his tour experience and natural ability on the golf course, but casual players can still pick up quite a bit of wisdom simply by studying and applying elements found in Rahm's golf swing.
In the process of chasing the swings of top speed golf pros, most players I train begin to understand that the best golf swing they can ever attain will be one that works best for their natural abilities and style. Being able to replicate your swing on demand requires developing a system that plays to your strengths and masks you weaknesses, ultimately crafting a golf swing that uniquely serves your natural abilities as an athlete.
Because Jon Rahm lacks the flexibility found in many other golfers with tour experience, his training team decided to focus on his unique upper body strength, which powers his golf swing beyond what many others on the PGA Tour are able to replicate.
Many golf instructors observe Rahm's uncanny ability to load his wrist joint with his large reserves of upper body strength.
Players must be mindful of how they load or unload the wrist action in their golf swings as this athletic motion has an effect on delofting the face, as seen with players who bow their lead wrist. A bowed wrist also has the ability to add strength to the clubface but can also signal a weakened grip in some players.
Golfers who bow their wrist often are able to utilize great mechanics and an ability to navigate their club on a well defined swing plane. But many casual players can encounter problems with bowing their wrists, so they should have their swing evaluated by a reputable source to ensure this swing style serves their style well.
