This week’s edition of the ECR Retail Loss Group’s series of webinars on the use of video technologies in retailing focused on Inter-organisational Collaboration through Video Technologies.
Many retailers still use CD’s and USB to share video with the police and the data subjects as per GDPR. We see significant improvement in this process’s automation, and Traegon Hon, Director of Global Physical Security at Starbucks, shared an impressive presentation on this subject.
With more than 600 cases to share per month, Starbucks, like many others, had high costs on handling the requests.
By automating sharing, preserving and verifying function, Starbucks were able to achieve the following results:
• Reduced time to fulfil requests from 2-6 weeks to 2 days
• Reduced material and shipping costs to $0
• Capability to require acknowledgement of acceptable use of footage
• Provides a detailed audit trail for handling evidence
• Access to files can be revoked
• File retention periods can be managed
There is still an open opportunity in automating the request/approve/download function.
For example, if internal policies and correct credentials and access in place, the video would be delivered without any human interaction.
We are looking forward to seeing how it will develop.
Important to mention that reduction capabilities allow the use of the sharing tool for operational purposes.
For example, reducted video could be used for training purposes and improving customer satisfaction.
Before the session, I received the interesting question, “Would be good to get a perspective from Middle East Retailers where various countries have legislation whereby law enforcement needs to be provided with unhindered access directly into the video storage servers.”
Even those we couldn’t answer this during the session, I reached out to my ME colleagues for advice.
The answer was the following:
“Law enforcement having access to retailers video storage servers is not uncommon; we have seen requirements across the middle east where private sector video surveillance shared both live and recording with the police, and this is a requirement in some sectors to have trade license renewed.”
When sharing, it’s essential to have robust solutions and process around access right, rotating people and so on.
The session had very strong participation with more than 50 participants and active contributions from 15+ retailers from the USA and Europe.
