The music John Williams wrote for Harry Potter is spectacular. But in the 3rd film, it has flaws.
Despite Williams scoring 1-3, the musical continuity disappears in the 3rd film, and we lose many great themes. I have tried to bring some of them back.
This scene was a deleted scene, and follows directly after Lupin & Harry have a heart to heart on the bridge. Ron & Hermione have just returned from Hogsmeade, where they talk all about their favorite moments from there (this scene was later covered up by shortening the dialogue and putting it in the grand staircase scene that follows).
In the deleted scene portion, I added a tune from Diagon Alley, which captures that cheerful/fun atmosphere we're experiencing here. It then segues nicely into our familiar 'friends' theme.
As Harry eats an unknown piece of candy, we get a very short motif that calls back to HP1 when Dumbledore samples an unknown Bertie Bott bean.
In the Grand Staircase shot, I dropped the conversation between Ron & Harry (as it's a repeat from the previous scene), which allowed for more focus on hearing/seeing the castle. I chose a personal favorite tune of mine to culminate the scene: Happy Hogwarts from the "Harry Potter 1 (PC) soundtrack. It adds a wonderfully magical feel.
