This video is about how to get a Sheriff's Card for a job in Las Vegas. When you are looking for a job at a business in Clark County (Las Vegas, Henderson, or North Las Vegas), sometimes a job will require that you have certain work cards in order to be employed. The most common work cards that people need are the
Food Handler's Card/Health Card, TAM Card and Sheriff's Card. If you are going to be working in a casino or gambling establishment, then you may be required to get a Gaming Card as well.

Depending on the job that you are applying for in Southern Nevada will dictate which cards you need in order to be permitted to work at that place of employment. The TAM Card and the Food Handler's Safety Card (formerly known as the Health Card) can mostly be completed online after you take a course and then pass an exam. The Sheriff's Card is the only one where you have to do the entire process in person. You can only get the Sheriff's Card after your future boss agrees to hire you. Once you have been hired for a job, then your boss, supervisor, hiring manager, or owner of the company will provide you with the form to get a Sheriff's Card. Your employer must sign their signature on that form so that you can take it to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Station at 400 South Martin Luther King Blvd. (just west of Highway I-15 near downtown) and obtain a Sheriff's Card.

At the Police Station you will have your fingerprints taken to be kept on file. The Police Station will run a background check on you to look into your criminal record. If you have a felony on your record, then it is possible that you can still get a Sheriff's Card.

If you have a felony, there are 4 main factors that are taken into consideration as to whether or not you can get the Sheriff's Card:
1. What you were convicted of
2. How long ago the felony took place
3. What industry you are attempting to work in
4. When you are going to work in a park of the Las Vegas Valley that is governed by the City of Las Vegas or governed by Clark County.

The rules from one industry to another can vary. If you are working in an industry like nightlife doing security, being a cashier, being a dancer, etc. then the rules for having a past felony are more lax than if you were applying to work in childcare or elderly care. Also, the City of Las Vegas will have more strict rules than Clark County. Another thing to keep in mind is that your particular potential employer may have their own policies and procedures in regards to candidates with misdemeanors, warrants and felonies that are more strict that the local laws and regulations.

When I renewed my Sheriff's Card the cost was $48, so the price is not going to break the bank by any means. I had my picture taken again, and received my new Sheriff's Card right on the spot. The whole process took less than 30 minutes. The card is valid for 5 years, and you must have your Sheriff's Card with you at your job every time you are clocked in to work.
