For 28 years the Berlin wall did so much more than cut a city in two. It cut the continent, it cut the world... into east, and west, and capitalism versus communism. Cold concrete, steel wire... symbolised cold war, sorrow, and political passion.
The world changed suddenly 20 years ago. It was as if the dividing stones dissolved.
The night the wall tumbled, chip by chip, the ninth of November, Communist Germany's television announcer Günther KUNERT slept badly, shaken. Then, as floodlights and torches gave way to daylight, he joined countless others streaming to see the long-forbidden west.
