Greed and coverups have caused the deaths and illnesses of thousands in the majority Black, poor city, with many effects still yet unknown. Status Coup has been covering this story for several years–Jordan Chariton since 2016, reporting there 17 times, and Jenn Dize since 2017, reporting there 7 times.
