An FPV Drone powertrain is a system of mechanisms that transmit power to give a vehicle its ability to move. Simply put, they are the “go-parts”. In a vehicle like a car this system includes parts like the engine, transmission and drivetrain, but on a drone the powertrain consists of the motors, esc’s, batteries, and the power distribution board or PDB.
Here are a few key things to look out for when building:
1) Make sure you aren’t over-specing your battery. Having too high a voltage can result in blowing your components as soon as you plug it in.
2) When choosing motors, pay close attention to the KV rating. KV describes motor rotations per volt per minute. The higher your battery voltage the faster the motors spin though too high a KV paired with an aggressive prop will result in less motor efficiency and shorter flight times.
3) If the propeller pitch is too aggressive and your motor doesn’t have the torque to spin at that KV then the extra energy fed to the motor will simply turn to heat, which is going to burn the enamel, and expose the copper windings, resulting in a short circuit.
