The Zumwalt-class destroyers are a class of guided-missile destroyers designed by the US Navy as multi-mission stealth ships with a ground assault focus.
Given that the ship is engineered with a full array of next-generation technology meant to redefine the paradigm for maritime warfare, the Zumwalt-class destroyers are an intriguing initial candidate for being the first place to integrate the CPS.
The Navy plans to equip its Zumwalt-class destroyers with a first-of-its-kind Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) hypersonic weapon that can destroy high-value targets in important locations throughout the world from strategically advantageous maritime attack locations.
Hypersonic arming of destroyers is a key part of the Pentagon's plans to increase strike range, strike flexibility, and the ability to strike at unprecedented speed. A destroyer at sea armed with long-range hypersonic missiles would be able to easily change its point of attack and relocate if necessary.
The Navy's plans to equip Zumwalt-class destroyers with the developing CPS are discussed in a fascinating Congressional Research Service Report on Hypersonic Weapons from October 2021, which predicted that the weapon would be operational by 2025.
